Headshots, an Essential Tool for Actors
If you look at the acting industry today, casting directors are looking for something very specific in a headshot. The days of overly glossy, heavily retouched, corporate-style portraits are gone. Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming a talented actress into the Hawaiian Sunset Photography studio here in Kailua-Kona for a dedicated headshot session. Our goal? To deliver that modern, authentic aesthetic while utilizing the precision of a professional studio environment.
The Challenge: Making Studio Light Look Natural
Shooting in a controlled studio environment is fantastic because you have total mastery over the lighting. However, that control can sometimes be a double-edged sword. If you aren't careful, it is very easy to over-light a subject, resulting in a stiff, artificial image that completely misses the mark for modern casting.
To avoid this, we carefully shaped our studio lighting to mimic the soft, flattering wrap of natural daylight. Even though we are often sought out as a natural light portrait photographer in Hawaii, applying those same organic lighting principles indoors allowed us to create an environment where the actress could shine without the lighting stealing the focus.
The Two Essential Looks Every Actor Needs
Any working actor will tell you that one headshot is rarely enough. When submitting to different types of roles, you generally need two distinct vibes: The Commercial Look and The Dramatic Look. We made sure to capture both during this session.
1. The Commercial Look
This is the light, bright, and approachable shot. It’s all about capturing a candid, warm energy—often with a genuine smile. Actors use this specific look when submitting for commercials, infomercials, TV hosting gigs, or any brand advertising. It tells the casting director, “I am friendly, relatable, and ready to sell your product.”
2. The Dramatic (Theatrical) Look
This is where the magic really happens in the studio. The dramatic look is used for film, television, and serious theatrical casting. For this setup, we worked closely with the actress to project a specific attitude. As a photographer, this is about capturing that indescribable spark in the subject's eyes—a subtle shift in expression that tells a complex story and projects real emotion without saying a word. It requires a deeper connection between the actor and the lens, and the results from this session were absolutely stunning.
