A Stunning Oceanfront Ceremony at the Royal Kona Resort
When it comes to planning the perfect destination wedding, finding a location that captures the island's true essence is everything. As a Big Island wedding photographer, I recently had the honor of capturing a breathtaking wedding at the Royal Kona Resort. Surrounded by 40 to 50 of their closest friends and family, the bride and groom said their vows in one of the most unique settings the resort has to offer: a secluded, sandy oasis perfectly embedded among the rugged black lava rocks. With the beautiful shoreline of the Kona coast stretching out in the background, the scene was absolutely magical.
The wedding ceremony itself was deeply moving and rich with local culture. A wonderful Hawaiian female minister led the proceedings, honoring the islands with a beautiful traditional chant and the customary exchange of leis. One of the most touching moments was the blessing of the rings, which were gently bathed in ocean water from a beautiful, handcrafted Koa wood bowl. These traditional Hawaiian cultural elements always add a deep, spiritual resonance to the day. The resort’s wedding coordinator did an incredible job bringing the couple's vision to life, providing a stunning floral arch that perfectly framed the endless Pacific Ocean behind them.
After the beautiful ceremony, the celebration seamlessly transitioned into a brief, elegant reception right there by the water. The Royal Kona Resort provided a beautiful setup for the couple to cut their cake, share a champagne toast, and listen to heartfelt speeches from their guests. This is a fantastic trend we are seeing more of: couples opting for a simple, meaningful mini-reception immediately following the vows. It allows you to have a gorgeous, stress-free celebration while easily managing an affordable budget! (The resort also offers other incredible spaces, like a manicured grass lawn with a gazebo overlooking the ocean, giving couples plenty of options).
Once the toasts were finished, we took the newlyweds and their families for portraits. One of the best parts about this specific venue is that you can walk right out onto the lava rocks. Taking wedding photos on this dramatic, textured terrain is a Kailua-Kona trademark and creates truly epic imagery.
For this wedding, our team at Hawaii Sunset Photography didn't just provide wedding photography; we also delivered a comprehensive Hawaii video package. By shooting with two cameras, we were able to capture a dynamic variety of angles—from sweeping, wide scenic shots of the Kona coast to intimate close-ups of the bride and groom's emotional reactions. The final product was beautifully edited into one of our signature cinematic wedding films, complete with a highly romantic montage at the end. It was an unforgettable day, and we are so thrilled to have preserved these memories for such a wonderful couple!
